Bowflex® SelectTech® 552 Dumbbells

Happy birthday to me!! Well it was definitely a happy birthday when I opened up a box to find these gems. Thanks to all that chipped in. =)

Bowflex SelectTech Dumbbell

Everyone that I hang out with knows that I’m on the P90X training program at the moment. These are the perfect tool for it,  I’ve been using a couple shitty dumbells that are a mega pain to change.  I now have the problem of finding someone to give them to.  Not a bad problem to have.

I’ve used them a few times now and it is as easy as it looks to change the weights. Check this

Here’s the big easy to use adjustment dial. The mechanism is smooth and clicks to the correct weight with little pressure. The measures are in pounds, my brain works in metric but it didn’t take long to get used to it. Just multiply by 2.2. Not entirely accurate, but accurate enough.

Bowflex Weight Adjustment Knob

The biggest bonus for me is that the units will save space. A big plus as I live in a small apartment. P90X doesn’t require a lot of equiptment, dumbbells being the biggest space eater. The other bonus is it works out to be fairly cheap. Cheaper than getting a long rack filled with fixed weights.

One drawback I’ve found is the width. When set at just 5lbs, you’re carrying a dumbbell the same width as a 52.5lbs. The other drawback is it’s fixed to just the one set. If you have a training buddy, you can only share them if you take turns. So hang on to those old weights of yours for your social workout sessions.

All in all, great tidy unit. I’d recommend them to anyone serious about a home gym. or P90X.

The Basin 1 in 20 Cycing Climb

So a week after the big around the day in a day ride, we still took the bikes out for and easy 80km ride towards the dandenong mountains. Surprising because we didn’t touch our bikes for a week after last year’s ride! ha.

I mounted my gopro helmet hero to my bike using a handlebar mount here are the results. Just be aware, I had to reduce the quality of the video for youtube. The original file is a whole lot clearer.

This here is a popular cycling spot. Great for hill climbing training. This spot is called the 1 in 20 because for every 20meters you travel, you get 1 meter in elevation. It’s about a 7.5km painful stretch of tar that will challenge most. To get there, find Mountain Highway in The Basin, and you’ll see the hill. Good luck if you ever try it.

Oh and grab yourself something from the bakery on your way back. It’s ace.

I picked up one of these gems in the winter of 09 for a snowboarding trip and I love it. I now use surfing and cycling. (Additional bike mount required)

Awesome little toy

Awesome little toy

After my mate put in an order for two of these units (thanks Sany), I went out to buy some re-chargable AAA batteries and a couple 2 gigabyte SD cards (with a firmware update it now takes up to 4 gigabytes) and impatiently waited for the cameras to arrive. We cut it close with the timing as our departure for New Zealand was a couple weeks away, but thankfully it came on time.

Features

  • 170º Wide angle Lens 170
  • Shockproof/Waterproof Quick-Release Housing rated to 100 feet/30 meters
  • 1 Headlamp-Style Head Strap
  • 1 Vented Helmet Strap
  • 2 Curved, 3M™ Adhesive Mounts
  • 2 Flat, 3M™ Adhesive Mounts
  • 1 Three-Way Pivoting Side Arm Assembly
  • 2 Quick-Release Buckles
  • 1 USB/RCA Combo Cable
  • Warranty: One Year
  • 5 Megapixel Stills
  • Modes: Video, Standard Photo, Photo every 2 or 5 seconds
  • Power 2 x AAA batteries

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Easily Mountable
  • Once you learn how to navigate the menu, it is easy to get around with the two button system
  • Housing is simple and not fiddly
  • Besides the batteries and memory card, you’re ready to go out of the box.
  • Wide angle lens reduces camera “shake” and gets all the action in the frame, but does make far items seem further.

Cons

  • Poor sound while in the housing, it’s pretty much unusable sound.
  • Although the autoexposure is good during the day, don’t bother getting it out at night.
  • Lack of viewfinder to replay video.

Verdict

With its minimalist design, and robust build it’s perfect for what it is designed for. Action sports.

Great little unit, pick one up for your next surf/snow trip at http://www.goprocamera.com
